Have you got troubling chest symptoms?  If you’re over 40 and have had symptoms for over three weeks, you can get a free chest X-ray without the need to see your GP.

Is this service for me?

To use the self request chest X-ray service you must be:

  • Aged 40 or over
  • Registered with a Leeds GP
  • Have not had a chest X-ray or chest scan in the last two months.

and you have had one or more of the following for over three weeks:

  • Cough
  • Fatigue or tiredness
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Loss of appetite or weight
  • Chest pain
  • Coughing up blood
  • A lump in the neck

How do I use the service?

No appointment is necessary.  Just walk in to any of our X-ray departments and ask to use the Self-Request Chest X-ray service.  You will be asked to complete a paper form to check you are eligible, before having your Chest X-ray.

Counselling for Women with a history of abuse and trauma

 Mbola is a qualified person-centred therapist, BACP registered and accredited. Her experience includes working with vulnerable adults with complex needs, such as attachment difficulties, domestic violence and histories of sexual abuse. She also has experience of working with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and relationship difficulties. As well as English, Mbola is fluent in French and Malagasy, her native language.

Mbola supports women on zero or low incomes who have experience of childhood or present trauma and are ready to enter therapy. Patients are referred to her from within the practice.

Leeds Sexual Health Service

Leeds Sexual Health Service offers Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) screening and treatment, HIV testing and contraception services. Their main base is in Beeston Hill Health Centre with serviceshttps://www.leedssexualhealth.com/ also offered at Armley Moor Health Centre, Chapeltown Health Centre and Seacroft clinic.

Bowel Screening

The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme is continuing to roll out the age extension of the eligible target population. This age extension is being implemented at different phases in different geographical areas. It has now been confirmed that patients registered with a GP Practice in Leeds are now eligible to be invited into the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme from the age of 50.  
This makes the target population 50 – 74 years in Leeds, with screening offered to patients every 2 years.

Non-NHS Services

Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:

  • Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.).
  • Letters to non-NHS agencies.
  • Insurance claim forms. 
  • Prescriptions for taking medication abroad. 
  • Private sick notes. 
  • Vaccination certificates.

The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.

What happens when you quit?

The sooner you quit, the sooner you’ll notice changes to your body and health. Look at what happens when you quit for good.

After 8 hours

Your oxygen levels are recovering, and the harmful carbon monoxide level in your blood will have reduced by half.

After 48 hours

All carbon monoxide is flushed out. Your lungs are clearing out mucus and your senses of taste and smell are improving.

After 72 hours

If you notice that breathing feels easier, it’s because your bronchial tubes have started to relax. Also your energy will be increasing.

After 2 to 12 weeks

Blood will be pumping through to your heart and muscles much better because your circulation will have improved.

After 3 to 9 months

Any coughs, wheezing or breathing problems will be improving as your lung function increases by up to 10%.

After 1 year

Great news! Your risk of heart attack will have halved compared with a smoker’s.

After 10 years

More great news! Your risk of death from lung cancer will have halved compared with a smoker’s.

Alcohol & Drug Support Service

Forward Leeds is the city’s free, confidential alcohol and drug support service. They can support you to help achieve your goals around your alcohol and/or drug issues. That might be stopping completely or just cutting down. You set your own goals.

You can see a professional alcohol and drug worker from Forward Leeds here at our practice, or if you prefer we can refer you into one of their hubs in the city.

Since the service began in 2015, 1 in 33 adults in Leeds has been helped by their service and they have an Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission.

They can offer everything from advice and coaching through to access to a detox and rehab depending on what support would suit you best.
